Arthritis Q & A

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a disease that can cause inflammation, stiffness, and pain in your joints. While there are more than 100 known types of arthritis, the two most common that affect people as they age are:

Osteoarthritis describes a condition that results when the protective cartilage that lines the end of your joints begins wearing out and breaking down. This loss of cartilage allows the bones to rub together, creating friction and inflammation that ultimately causes chronic pain and limits range of motion in the joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease that results from an autoimmune dysfunction. This dysfunction causes the immune system to mistakenly attack the healthy lining of the joints, causing chronic inflammation and pain.

Without proper treatment, arthritis can result in permanent joint damage or deformities and lead to chronic pain and disability.

Who gets arthritis?

Risk factors for arthritis increase as you get older, especially if you have a family history of the disease. You may also be at increased risk for arthritis if you’re overweight or obese, due to the added pressure on your joints.

If you have a history of injuries to your joint, you may develop arthritis at an earlier age.

How is arthritis diagnosed?

If you have persistent pain or swelling in your joints, it’s important that you seek a medical evaluation as soon as possible. Integrity Pain Consultants can help you better manage pain and immobility by identifying arthritis in the earliest stages.

During your evaluation, your Integrity Pain Consultants provider reviews your medical history and physically examines the joint to check for signs of arthritis, such as redness, swelling, and limited range of motion.

To determine the type of arthritis you have, you may need an X-ray or other imaging tests. These tests can also determine the severity of your condition so Integrity Pain Consultants can create the right treatment plan for you.

What treatments are available for arthritis?

Your treatment plan for arthritis takes into consideration your job, lifestyle, and age. Many people benefit from nonsurgical treatments, including physical therapy and at-home exercises to strengthen the muscles that support the arthritic joint.

Over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatories may also help keep you comfortable and physically active. If these medications aren’t enough to control pain, your provider at Integrity Pain Consultants may recommend injectable medications, like steroids and a local anesthetic. Injections go directly into your joint to provide you with long-lasting pain relief.

If you have chronic pain due to degenerative joint changes that put pressure on surrounding nerves, you may be a candidate for a nerve block. This type of injectable therapy uses a numbing agent to stop pain signals from traveling to your brain.

Integrity Pain Consultants also offers regenerative treatment with stem cells or platelet-rich plasma (PRP), substances found naturally in your blood. PRP contains essential growth factors that stimulate healing of the damaged joint from the inside out. Stem cells have the unique ability to regenerate into any type of cell and can stimulate the growth of new, healthy cartilage in your joints. Stem cell therapy can also regenerate healthy new bone to improve overall joint health.
