Neck Pain Q & A

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain can be the result of acute trauma to the structures of your neck, such as from a fall or an auto accident. Occasional neck pain is also a common side effect of poor posture that causes strain on your neck muscles. If your pain is chronic, it may be due to a degenerative disease in your cervical spine.

Some of the most common causes of chronic neck pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Herniated disc
  • Nerve compression
  • Compression fractures
  • Degenerative disc disease

If you can’t find pain relief with home care and over-the-counter medications, you should schedule a diagnostic consultation at Integrity Pain Consultants to prevent a worsening of your condition.

How is neck pain diagnosed?

During a diagnostic evaluation for chronic neck pain, your provider at Integrity Pain Consultants reviews your medical history and discusses the location and severity of your pain. You should also let them know if your neck pain radiates down into your shoulders and arms, which may be an indication there’s pressure on a nearby nerve.

As part of a comprehensive physical exam, your provider may ask you to move in certain ways to assess the flexibility and range of motion in your neck. They may order imaging tests, like X-rays, to get a closer look at the structures of your cervical spine to identify degenerative conditions like arthritis or a herniated disc.

Once they understand the root cause of your neck pain, Integrity Pain Consultants creates a treatment plan that focuses on easing pain and increasing neck mobility.

How is neck pain treated?

Initially, your Integrity Pain Consultants provider may recommend physical therapy to help strengthen the muscles in your neck to better support your cervical spine.

If you have persistent pain that makes it difficult to engage in exercises, you may benefit from injections of anesthetic medications and anti-inflammatories into the epidural space of your spine or into the vertebrae of your neck. Integrity Pain Consultants also offers nerve blocks, which inject a numbing agent into nerve fibers to disrupt pain signals from traveling to the brain.

For certain degenerative conditions, like arthritis, injections of stem cells or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can help regenerate healthy new cells to replace the damaged ones. PRP comes from your blood and contains special growth factors that promote healing. Stem cells come from fatty tissue in your body and have the unique ability to generate into any type of cell, including nerve, bone, and muscle, to improve the efficiency of your healing.

Your provider at Integrity Pain Consultants can also work with you on lifestyle changes to improve your posture and reduce your risk for neck muscle fatigue.

If you have chronic neck pain that’s not treatable with rest or over-the-counter medicine, schedule a consultation at the Integrity Pain Consultants office nearest you online or by phone today.
