Sciatica Q & A

What is sciatica?

Sciatica refers to the symptoms that you experience when your sciatic nerve is pinched. The sciatic nerves leave your lower spine, travel through your left and right buttocks, and continue down each leg.

The nerve may become pinched by a spinal injury, but sciatica is typically caused by a degenerative condition such as:

  • Herniated disc
  • Bone spurs
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Slipped vertebra
  • Degenerative disc disease

Of all the possible causes, a herniated disc is responsible for 90% of all cases of sciatica.

What symptoms develop due to sciatica?

Sciatica’s primary symptom is pain that radiates from your lower back down one leg. The severity of your pain can range from mild to severe. Your pain may feel like an aching or burning sensation, or an excruciating, electric shock-like pain.

You may also experience tingling or numbness along the nerve as it goes down your leg and into your foot. In severe cases, sciatica may cause muscle weakness in your leg.

What treatment might I receive for sciatica?

Integrity Pain Consultants offers comprehensive care that incorporates physical, interventional, and regenerative medicine. Your treatment begins with physical therapy to improve movement, strengthen the supporting muscles, and improve your pain. Your provider may also talk with you about nutrition and weight loss if needed.

If your symptoms don’t improve or your pain gets worse, your provider may recommend interventional therapies. Interventional medicine targets the source of your pain by blocking the nerves that send pain signals to your brain. When your brain doesn’t receive the pain signal, you don’t feel the pain or your pain is significantly diminished.

Some of the interventional and regenerative treatments for sciatica offered at Integrity Pain Consultants include:

  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Spinal cord stimulation
  • Nerve blocks
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections
  • Stem cell injections

When your sciatic nerve is pinched by a herniated disc or degenerative disc disease, your provider at Integrity Pain Consultants may recommend the Discseel® Procedure.

What should I expect during a Discseel Procedure?

After consulting with your provider to determine if you’re a good candidate for the Discseel Procedure, you’ll have an annulogram, which is a specialized X-ray that detects subtle problems in your discs. Then your provider at Integrity Pain Consultants injects fibrin into the damaged disc. Over the next few months, fibrin promotes tissue growth and healing in the disc to relieve your pain.
